About Us: Background

About Us

The R2K Network

The R2K Network is an umbrella group of organizers, coordinators and activists planning to demonstrate, educate and agitate before and during the upcoming Republican National Convention. The network includes the Ad Hoc Committee to Defend Healthcare, Unity 2000, the Kensington Welfare Rights Union, the Philadelphia Direct Action Group, and other groups planning or participating in Convention-related actions.

Some R2K members are engaged in direct action and civil disobedience; others have "worked within the system," though with some difficulty, and obtained permits and city services for their events. All are committed to peaceful, non-violent political activity.

A partial listing of organizations planning R2K activities includes:

Philadelphia Ad Hoc Committee to Defend Health Care

Sponsoring A Call to Action To Save Healthcare Demonstration on Saturday, July 29 at 11am in Franklin Square, 6th and Race, Philadelphia, PA followed by a rally at 1:30pm in LOVE Park at 16th and JFK Boulevard.

The endorsers of this demonstration stand behind the following five principles:
  • The healing professions must not be diverted from their primary purpose; the relief of suffering, the prevention and treatment of illness, and the promotion of health.
  • Pursuit of corporate profit and personal fortune have no place in caregiving.
  • Potent financial incentives that reward overcare or undercare weaken professional bonds, and should be prohibited.
  • A patient's right to a health professional of choice must not be curtailed.
  • Access to healthcare must be the right of all.
Independent Media Center of Philadelphia

The Independent Media Center of Philadelphia (IMC-Philly) is dedicated to building media democracy by providing progressive, in-depth, and accurate coverage of issues which affect all communities and by increasing community access to available technologies and information for the production and distribution of news and analysis. A not-for-profit, volunteer-based collaboration of independent media makers and press liaisons, IMC-Philly operates in solidarity with an international network of independent media centers which create alternatives to the profit-driven agenda of the corporate media.

Kensington Welfare Rights Union

The Kensington Welfare Rights Union (KWRU) is a multi-racial organization of, by and for poor and homeless people. We believe that we have a right to thrive - not just barely survive. KWRU is dedicated to organizing of welfare recipients, the homeless, the working poor and all people concerned with economic justice.

KWRU is the lead organizer of the March for Economic Human Rights taking place during the GOP Convention on July 31.

Philadelphia Direct Action Group

The Philadelphia Direct Action Group (P-DAG) invites you to Philadelphia to celebrate the Republican National Convention. Come help us in nonviolent direct action to protest and challenge the policies of the Republican Party.

P-DAG is a member of the R2K Network, and is the only group in Philadelphia organizing direct action throughout the convention. P-DAG operates according to the following principles:
  • We are organizing non-violent direct action in response to the Republican National Convention.
  • Our meetings are not a forum to plan property destruction.
  • We will not use drugs or alcohol during the planing or execution of our actions.
Unity 2000

Join thousands of concerned people and community and social change activists in Philadelphia for the Unity2000 March on July 30th. As the political parties gather this summer for nominating conventions, we are calling for a new direction for our nation. From every corner of the country, let us come, united, to say NO to business and politics as usual and YES to new priorities for our nation and the world.
